Anti-Poverty Week 12-18 October 2008
Community Sector Banking (CSB) is proud to be a Principal National Sponsor of Anti-Poverty Week - being held this year from 12-18 October 2008.
This sponsorship is in line with CSB’s objective of supporting initiatives that contribute to the social development of Australia.
Anti-Poverty Week is an Australia-wide initiative and focuses on ways of preventing people from experiencing poverty or hardship.
It is linked to the International Anti-Poverty Day that the United Nations has designated as Friday 17 October.
Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians and around the world more than a billion people are desperately poor.
The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:
-
strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship within Australia and around the world; and
- encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems - including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.
Last year, almost 300 different activities were organised by a wide range of groups, with a total participation of more than 10,000 people. Some were large events but others, which are equally welcome, were much smaller and localised as community events.
A full calendar of all notified activities for this year is available on the Anti-Poverty Week website.
CSB encourages all those interested in reducing the incidence of poverty to become involved in this important and rapidly growing national initiative.
